Vet Tech Online

Many adults who may already have full time jobs and families to raise decide to change careers. If you're someone who has a busy schedule but wants to work as a veterinary technician, it is possible to learn to be a vet tech online. There are distance learning programs you can enroll in that will teach you how to work in this field. The issue with online vet tech programs is that a lot of the coursework is hands-on. Therefore even if you complete a lot of your work online you will still need to train under a licensed veterinarian before you can earn your certification or degree. There may be one or more veterinarians near you who participate in these types of educational training programs.

The first step when seeking distance learning is to get online and browse. You will find some correspondence courses that offer educational materials and a diploma but no certification or accreditation. Steer clear of these because you will not become a vet tech by completing one of these pseudo-educational programs. What you need is a distance learning program nationally accredited by a notable organization such as the AVMA, which stands for the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Distance learning may entail reading textbooks, taking online quizzes and tests, interacting via web conference with teachers and students and more. In addition to your online coursework you will of course be training in a clinical setting with a real veterinarian. You'll learn to perform tests, perform basic nursing duties, assist during surgery, administer injections and much more. Other important lessons you'll pick up on the job include how to deal with anxious or aggressive pets and their owners. A vet tech must not only have a way with animals but with their owners also.

When you learn to be a vet tech online, you usually get to take tests and do written coursework at your convenience within a certain deadline. However your time training at a veterinarian's office will probably be scheduled for certain dates and times and will not be as flexible. Although it can take two years or more to become a veterinary technician, the time spent obtaining your education is well worth it. Many veterinary technicians go on to have long, rewarding careers and may even build on their education and earning potential by taking continuing education classes or getting a four year degree.
