Vet Tech Education
Do you love animals? If so, a vet tech education may be the perfect thing for you after high school. Even if you are well past your high school years you can still decide to change your career or life path and learn to become a certified veterinary technician. These professionals assist veterinarians in a variety of ways. They may take blood samples, test laboratory samples of blood, feces and urine, administer injections and medications, weigh animals and assist with surgery. Technicians cannot diagnose conditions, prescribe medications or perform surgical procedures but there is a lot of important tasks they can do.
There are many places where you can learn to become a veterinary technician. Many colleges and universities offer vet tech programs. These are usually two year programs that award you an Associates Degree and prepare you for the state licensing exam. There are also continuing education programs for current techs who want to expand their knowledge. Trade schools are also places where you may be able to find vet tech courses. There are even distance learning programs for those who want to study at home.
You should know that while you can do your book work and take written tests via distance learning online, you cannot complete all of your education this way. The reason for this is because the duties performed by a vet tech must be taught in a hands-on real world setting. You can read all you want about extracting blood from an animal for testing but you won't know how to do it until you are actually practicing under the careful supervision of a veterinarian. Distance learning must be supplemented with this type of accredited on the job tutelage before a degree can be earned.
When searching for any vet tech education program, look for programs that have been accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association, or AVMA. Another organization you should be aware of is the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America or NAVTA which provides continuing education and assistance with various employment related activities that help techs learn and grow in their career. Another thing that can help when looking for the right training program is talking to veterinary technicians in your area and asking them where they went to school. This can be a very good way to not only find a good educational program but also get some inside information about life as a vet tech.
