Vet Tech Colleges

There are lots of vet tech colleges located all over the country from which you can choose. Most students decide to stay close to home and choose a college in their state of residence. You don't have to, of course. You can travel to obtain your education but most do not. One reason for this is because you most likely have an accredited school near you where you can get your education. In order to become a licensed vet tech you must not only graduate from a two or four year program but also pass a state exam.

During your search for schools you may find more than one that looks promising. When faced with the choice of two or more schools how can you pick the best one? The first step is doing some preliminary research. Any school you consider should be AVMA accredited. AVMA is an acronym which stands for the American Veterinary Medical Association and is the most important association when it comes to the accreditation of vet tech schools. There may also be state organizations you should look into when it comes to obtaining your education and researching your career.

In addition to AVMA accreditation, the school should have a website where you can learn more about their programs. If they don't, what does that say about their level of professionalism? There should also be admissions advisors at the ready to answer your questions. You will want to take a guided tour of any school you are considering to view the facilities in person. Many vet tech schools have working animal hospitals and clinics, state of the art simulation rooms and even outdoor barn areas. Bel-Rea in Colorado is one of the biggest schools and has everything on campus an aspiring vet tech needs to obtain a quality education.

Once you've checked for accreditation, looked over the websites and toured the schools you are ready to make a decision. One factor we haven't yet discussed when it comes to choosing a school is price. If you are considering two colleges and they are equally appealing, you may want to go for the cheaper program. If you need assistance with tuition, there may be scholarships, loans and grants you can apply for to help pay for your vet tech education.
