Vet Tech Certification

The life of a veterinary technician is never dull when they're at work. This is because the job is rewarding and often exciting. If you love helping animals and need a new career you may want to get your vet tech certification. All veterinary technicians must be certified by the state board before they can practice. This is a process that takes between two and four years to complete. More than just a job, veterinary technology is a career that takes education and training.

You can attend a two year program and receive your Associates degree. Or, you can attend a four year program and receive your Bachelors. Some students start with the two year program, go to work as a vet tech and pursue their four year degree at night school or via distance learning. Distance learning is a viable option for most every career field including that of a vet tech. You might take classes and interact with instructors and other students online. However you will need to intern or work with a veterinarian as well.

Your tasks as a veterinary technician are going to be very hands on. While there may be some light clerical work involved the bulk of your duties are going to be dealing directly with the animal patients and their owners. You may extract blood samples and test them, administer medications, advise pet owners on pet care, assist the veterinarian with surgical procedures and much more. Within the course of a day you might see a variety of different animals with a range of medical issues. Sometimes things will be slow, sometimes they will be busy. If you want a job that packs an adrenaline rush and helps animals in need of immediate care consider working as a vet tech at a 24 hour emergency clinic.

Regardless of where you want to work or what kind of animals you want to specialize in treating, obtaining your vet tech certification is the very first step. Once you've successfully graduated from your educational program, completed your internship, passed your exam and registered for licensure you are ready for certification. Once certified, you can work at any veterinarian's office as a technician. Finding jobs can prove challenging although some schools offer job placement assistance that is very helpful.
