Vet Tech Assistant

If you know you want to work with animals there are a variety of career opportunities available. Veterinarians must complete a long and rigorous education before becoming certified. Of course the pay for a veterinarian is rather high but it corresponds to the length of education and importance of job duties. For those not able or willing to devote the time and effort to this there is the veterinary technician program. A veterinary technician is basically an animal nurse and may have a vet tech assistant that works with them. This is yet another job to consider, especially if you don't want to undergo a lot of training and education.

A veterinary technician assistant is not a certified vet tech. Rather, they assist these technicians in various duties like restraining animals, preparing rooms, gathering supplies, performing certain procedures and attending to boarded pets. You may also hear this job referred to as kennel assistant. This is an important job but one that does not require the years of education it takes to become a veterinarian or veterinary technician. Usually you can enter into a kennel assistant position with no education.

It does help to have experience caring for animals and dealing with people. If you are one of those people who says they prefer animals to people you should know you will be required to deal with both. Not only will you interact with your coworkers but you will also come into contact with pet owners and must present a friendly, professional demeanor. Time spent working in a pet store, at an animal shelter or even a history of raising your own pets can help you get your foot in the door at a veterinary clinic.

The life of a vet tech assistant is not as high pressure as that of a veterinarian. You will not have to give injections or take blood samples like vet techs do. However you may be called upon for some messy work, after all assistants usually take care of things like the removal of pet waste, the feeding of animals and the stocking and gathering of medical items for the veterinarians and their technicians. A job as a tech assistant is a perfect introduction for a high school student or anyone else thinking of pursuing an education in the veterinary career field.
