School Vet Tech
Becoming a veterinary technician is a process that can take a couple of years. This is because the knowledge required and duties performed by these professionals is quite extensive. There are school vet tech educational programs at colleges and trade schools that can help you achieve your career goals. There are even distance learning programs, however before considering this kind of education you should know a lot of your coursework is hands-on and done in a clinical or laboratory setting. You will need to train under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian whether you choose distance learning or a traditional classroom education.
There is plenty of book study to be done when you are completing your education. You'll learn about biology, anatomy and even psychology of domestic and wild animals. In order to perform your job duties you'll need to be familiar with the animals you'll be working with. Most veterinary clinics see mostly cats and dogs, although some see more exotic pets like birds, reptiles and rodents. There are also equine and farm veterinarians that travel to their patients and require technicians who are trained specifically in the care of horses and farm animals.
You will need to figure out what kind of job you desire before deciding on an educational program. While the majority of vet techs in training will go on to work at a veterinarian's office, others may assist farm vets as described above, work in laboratory testing facilities or even at zoos. There are lots of different career opportunities for veterinary technicians these days. The work can be grueling and difficult in some cases, however most in the field would say their job is fulfilling in both personal and financial ways. For the amount of time spent in training vet techs make a reasonably good salary which of course varies depending on several factors.
After completing your school vet tech education and becoming state certified to work as a veterinary technician, you are ready to search for jobs. In addition to reading the classified help wanted ads in your local paper you may be able to find jobs online as well. There are job sites like Monster in addition to various local help wanted websites based in certain areas of the country. Your local employment commission is also a good place to look. Another idea is to write or call the veterinarians in your area and let them know you are a newly certified veterinary technician seeking employment.
