Ohio Veterinary Technicians
Whether you are a current vet tech or an aspiring one, there is information for Ohio veterinary technician programs that can help you. Education is crucial, whether you are planning your career or trying to go further in it. If you are thinking of a career in veterinary technology, you must consider all the factors before enrolling in any college or trade school. In Ohio, it is necessary to complete either a two year Associates or a four year Bachelors program in veterinary technology. And, that's not even all. You must pass the state exam and register for licensure.
After all of that is successfully completed, you can practice in Ohio as a licensed veterinary technician. Your duties may include assisting the physician with surgery, performing tests, extracting blood samples, giving vaccines, clipping claws and more. In the course of a day you might deal with a variety of animals including cats, dogs, ferrets, even birds and lizards. Birds and lizards are considered exotic animals. Some vets handle these and others do not.
You might even want to specialize in veterinary technology for horses. For this you would need to take a continuing education program for equine vet techs or choose a program that offers an equine vet tech program. Caring for horses is very different from caring for cats or dogs because you are required to travel with the veterinarian to the stable where the patients are kept. You may even be sent out to job sites on your own to administer medications or tests. Equine vet techs also help the horse owners better care for their animals.
No matter what kind of Ohio veterinary technician you want to become, there are some associations you should be aware of and consider joining. NAVTA stands for National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America and is an association you can join no matter where you live. You may also want to join the Ohio Association of Veterinary Technicians which is a state organization that supports and helps educate vet techs who are seeking education or already working in the field. There are all kinds of organizations available to support veterinary professionals and help them be the best they can be.
