Equine Vet Tech
An equine vet tech is a professional veterinary technician who has been trained and certified in horse care. Unlike a veterinary technician that works in a veterinarian's office, this type of tech usually travels with her supervising vet to the patient's location. Duties in this line of work may include preventative medicine, administration of injections and medications, assisting with surgery and birth, assisting with euthanasia when necessary and basic horse care and maintenance. Many vets and their technicians work closely with horses and their owners to ensure these animals receive the best care possible.
You will need to complete an accredited veterinary technician program and receive your Associates Degree and state certification. From there you can work with schools and associations like the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America and the American Medical Veterinary Association. Another recommended organization is the AAEVT, or American Association of Equine Veterinary Technicians. The AAEVT offers certification programs, conferences, support and information for this career field. Becoming a member of this association is definitely a plus for equine techs.
Just like with any veterinary technology educational program, an equine focused program combines traditional coursework with hands-on practice. You will learn everything you need to know about horses and how to work with them in a medical setting. Although vet techs cannot diagnose conditions, prescribe medications or perform surgery they do perform a great many procedures and administer nursing care to horses and their offspring. If you are a horse lover this career field should prove very rewarding for you.
If you're not quite sure whether or not you want to be an equine vet tech or a vet tech that works in an office with smaller pets, make a list of your likes and dislikes. If you enjoy travel then you should enjoy working with equines because travel is a part of the job. If you don't think you'd enjoy driving to different locations perhaps a job at a local vet's office is more your style. You can always start out in one specialty area like horses and decide to switch to caring for smaller pets, or vice versa. There are plenty of opportunities in the veterinary world for certified technicians who love animals and are devoted to providing them with quality medical care.
