Certified Vet Tech

The process of choosing a career path can sometimes be challenging. Just because you like animals does not mean you should become a certified vet tech. There are aspects of the job that can be grueling, tedious and heartbreaking. Not to mention the education for such a career spans approximately two years and can be hard work, just like the job itself. However if you have a real desire to help pets heal then this might be the career field for you.

First, evaluate where you currently are. Are you a high school student considering your educational future? Maybe you are in your twenties or thirties, perhaps with a full time job already. No matter what your age it is possible to change paths and become a veterinary technician thanks to flexible hours at colleges and even distance learning. Many working adults appreciate distance learning because much of the work can be done at your convenience from home. However you should know that the bulk of the education for this career is hands-on which means it will take place at an actual veterinarian's office or classroom simulation.

There are varying state regulations regarding certification for vet techs. In most states you must complete an accredited program and pass an exam. Once you do this you are able to practice as a veterinary technician. However, you may want to expand your education while doing so. Continuing education is popular with working vet techs because it can help them reach new heights in their career. You can specialize in a certain area like exotic, equine or bovine animals or even get your four year degree. Lots of opportunities exist for vet techs of today.

The salary of a certified vet tech will vary depending on your location. However as compared to other careers with similar education requirements vet techs are on the high end of the spectrum. In addition to location playing a large part in how much you'll earn, your experience and where you work will also factor in. Earnings aside, a career as a veterinary technician is one that can reward you in many ways for years to come. To learn more about becoming a vet tech, contact a college or learning center near you that offers this type of accredited educational program.
