Veterinary Technician Jobs

If animals delight you and you are seeking for a career that is both rewarding and lucrative consider the post of a veterinary technician. A vet tech works to assist their supervising veterinarian in a variety of ways. Veterinary technician jobs may entail duties such as recording and obtaining patient data, collecting various specimens such as blood, feces and urine, performing certain laboratory tests, providing basic nursing attention to patients, preparing patients for surgery and assisting during surgery. Vet techs may even take and develop X-rays. With so many varied duties you will never get bored in this career field.

There are certain things a veterinary technician cannot do. They are not allowed to diagnose any conditions, prescribe any medications or perform any surgical procedures. There are state regulations regarding veterinary technicians that vary depending on where you are located. The first step in becoming a vet tech in your state is to complete an accredited educational program. You can find these programs at colleges and trade schools. Make sure any program you are considering is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association or AVMA.

Distance learning is one more option when it comes to obtaining your education. While your book work and written tests may be done online, you will still be required to train under a licensed veterinarian because so much of the job cannot be learned in books. While you might study subjects like anatomy and animal care in books or online the bulk of your training will take place in a clinical setting. Procedures like drawing blood, testing samples and giving injections are things that must be practiced repeatedly before mastery is gained. Once your education is complete you will most likely undergo a state exam prior to vet tech licensure.

Once you've obtained your education and are licensed you can look for veterinary technician jobs in your preferred area. In some cases you may be able to get hired by the vet with whom you trained. However if not there are other opportunities. You will find a number of veterinarians practicing in even the smallest of towns. People love their pets, and need quality medical care for them. With so many pet owners and practicing veterinarians in the country finding employment shouldn't prove too difficult for licensed technicians. In addition to your credentials a love of animals and an outgoing personality are important to convey during the interview process because you will be working closely with pets and their owners.
